What is a digital punch card?

A digital punch card is a stamp card that lives on your customer's phone. Here is how it works, what it costs you, and how to start.

A coffee passed across the counter.

A digital punch card is a loyalty stamp card that lives on your customer's phone. Staff scan it to add a stamp, and the customer earns a reward after a set number of visits. It works like the paper card in your drawer, minus the lost cards and fake stamps.

How does a digital punch card work?

A digital punch card works the same way as paper: buy something, get a stamp, fill the card, get a treat. The difference is where the card lives and how the stamp gets added.

  1. The customer joins. They scan a QR code at your counter or tap a link. They add the card to their phone.
  2. They buy something. They show the card at the till, the same way they would show a boarding pass.
  3. Staff add a stamp. Staff scan the card's code. The stamp shows up on the card a moment later.
  4. The reward appears. When the card is full, the reward shows on the card. Staff scan it to redeem.

That is it. No hole punch, no ink stamp, no box of cards behind the counter.

Where does the card live on the phone?

The best place is the phone's built-in wallet app. On an iPhone that is Apple Wallet. On most Android phones it is Google Wallet. Both apps come with the phone, so nobody has to download anything.

Some loyalty systems use their own app instead. That adds a step: the customer has to find the app, install it and make an account. Many people skip that step. A wallet card skips it for them.

Tip: If a loyalty system asks your customers to download an app, ask yourself how many of your regulars would really do it at a busy counter.

What is better about digital than paper?

Digital cards fix the three classic paper problems: lost cards, fake stamps and silence. Here is what changes.

What can a digital punch card do that paper can't?

A wallet card can update itself and send short messages. That is the real upgrade.

When a stamp is added, the card changes on the phone right away. When a reward is ready, the card can show it. You can also send a short note that shows on the card and can pop up on the lock screen. Customers can turn those messages off anytime, so keep them useful.

You can switch in an afternoon. Pick your reward, set up the card, put a QR code by the till and tell people.

Questions people ask

What is a digital punch card?

It is a stamp card that lives on a customer's phone instead of in their pocket. Staff add a stamp by scanning it, and the customer gets a reward after a set number of visits.

Do customers need to download an app?

Not with a wallet card. The card goes into Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, which are already on most phones.

Do I need special hardware to stamp digital cards?

Many systems, Regulars included, let staff scan the card with any phone or tablet camera. You do not need a new terminal.

Can a customer lose a digital punch card?

It is much harder to lose. The card stays in the phone's wallet app, and the stamps are saved on the business side too.

Is a digital punch card the same as a points program?

Not quite. A punch card counts visits toward one reward. A points program adds points per visit or per dollar and can offer several rewards.
